Lots of cars on my list of future ex-project cars. This is one big one. And to be honest, I think this is the one to buy now. Today. Because not many on craigslist are anything other than projects, meaning everyone knows exactly what they have. And that’s 1 of 11,616 in the US.
Of the total 924 production numbers ( 83,000 US cars) 14% are turbo. The S model was produc ed in larger numbers, not many but more and isn’t all that special. Drivers range from $ 6-9k and even those need some work. $3k will get you a restoration project. So, with 170hp on boost, 2450 pounds of weight, excellent balance, I think this is something really ready to become valuable. Especially since Magnus Walker is now playing with them, which means whatever he touches, everyone else wan ts as well.

I’m not as keen on the 924 compared to the 944 except this beauty...
it’s the flared arches that fixes it

I keep waiting for 924 and 944 prices to skyrocket.

They will. Pick the rarer ones though. The old white males that told everyone what real Porsches and real Ferraris are, well, are either too old to keep telling people that or are dead. The ones left that CAN tell everyone what IS and ISN’T are you and I now. Or, people who were kids looking at awesome car mags in the seventies/eighties who loved the angular wedge car stylings or who didn’t care engines were in the front now. That’s why the Dino/Ferrari 308 GT4 went from 20k a few years ago to 80k+ today. It’s why the Integra Type-R went for $50k+ recently. It’s why an exceptionally clean 924 turbo carrera sells for near $100k.
944 numbers : 56,900+ us models. Of those, almost 14,000 turbos, 8 815 s-models, 3 650 S2 models, 2 477 S2 cabrios. So apart from the turbo being desired because of it’s big power and performance , an 89-91 s2 convertibles see ms the fewest in number in the US.

As long as the prices on base 924s don’t skyrocket I’m good. I had one for a while and still miss it. Even with the van motor it was a really fun car, but 200hp in one of these would be perfect. My I-have-no-idea-how-it-would-work project idea for a base 924 is to lower it slightly, a d some JDM style fender flares, and pull out the stock lump and replace it with a Ford 3.0 V6.

Adding an inter-cooler and megasquirt would probably get you the 200hp desired, especially if a bump up to euro spec compression is done. The carrera GT had 210hp and just with an added inter-cooler and a few pounds more boost. I think the 924 prices will start to rise. The word is getting out that they’re easy to work on, aren’t requiring extra attention like the 944 engine, and just a really good little car with a durable engine, like you found out. I like the 931 cause of the limited production, limited numbers left, and it also being a ball of fun. What’s not to like.

I’m sure glad I’m fixing mine. It’s gonna be the best car I’ve ever owned when it’s ready for this summer!

I would be buying a west coast one right now (added intercooler) but i got other irons in the fire for this year. if its still for sale or an equally good one is available by next spring, for sure i’ll pick one up. ( That is unless someone gives me an awesome deal on a E-type coupe or something....)
